These two lovely kittens have found a home in Italy. One with Diego Gaddi and his family and one with Marco Calligaris and his family. Thank you to Diego and Marco for giving them forever homes, thanks to Giuseppe for connecting us to the travel companions and thank you to Immacolata for agreeing to take them to their new families! Great team work! Great networking! Great people!
Success stories of our rescues and the families we helped find.
These are LUNA and STELLA , two dumped puppies that were found by tourists. Luna was adopted and continues to live happily with our very own Karin Auer. Stella was adopted by a local family, but has sadly suffered an accident since her adoption and did not survive it.
Yes we save wildlife too! This gorgeous bird is called an Eleanora's Falcon. This species is stunningly beautiful and a seasonal visitor to our region. This particular one was found by Rosalba, a visitor to Patmos from Italy. She was on her boat when she and her crew noticed this injured bird and went out of their way to rescue it. Giuseppe, Rosalba's friend, contacted Mondo Cane's own, Anna Florentis, who picked up the injured bird and made arrangements for her to be taken in by ANIMA, a wildlife rescue organization in Greece. Once at ANIMA, she was examined and operated on to repair her broken wing. She was then transported to another branch of ANIMA that specializes in rehabilitation for birds of this kind, on Paros Island. Per our latest update, she is doing fantastic and as far as we are told, will be ready for release any day now!
Meet LETTIE and her puppies. Lettie, a purebred Cocker Spaniel, was imported by a local resident, only to be tied out and allowed to get pregnant, at which point the owner saw fit to take, not only her puppies, but Lettie herself, and leave them tied to a tree in Meloi Beach. Not long after being left, Lettie was picked up by a member and another volunteer, and a search for new homes for them began. Lettie was adopted and now lives in Halkida, by summer residents of the island, so we look forward to seeing her again very soon. The two black puppies were adopted by tourists, and the tan "mini Lettie", was adopted by our very own Marianne Smeding Gampierakis. He has been named ARGOS, and lives happily in Lambi with Marianne, her husband and canine sibling Boulis!
Betty: This cute little thing finally found a good home in Germany! Along with Duke and Thelma (now Maya) they arrived in Frankfurt in April 2014! Thank you to Anastasia, Sabine, Brigitte, Stephanie, Thanos, Roni and Yiannis for making it possible for these wonderful dogs, to reach their new families!
Not enough could be said about LUKA....he has tugged at the heart strings of everyone who came in contact with him! He was found and cared for by Angelo Pavia who was visiting the island, who in turn contacted us for a permanent solution. Luka was truly a genuine team effort as he was fostered by two people and transported by our very own Marianne Smeding to Holland, where he was taken in by the foster organization we are affiliated with. Being irresistible as he is, Luka's foster family decided they could not part with this amazing dog, so they adopted him. Luka is now living the life of love and comfort he deserves in Holland!
The "RUBBISH PUPPIES" Do these look like rubbish to anyone? Well someone thought they did because that is where these three were dumped. Found and rescued by Olga Kleoudis, she and her mother and one of our members, Karin Auer-Kleoudis took on the initial role of raising these gorgeous puppies. Luckily, Karin's great connections and networking skills led her to someone with a female dog that had a litter about the same age, and this lovely mother adopted our "Rubbish Puppies". They have all been adopted.
ELADO (meaning "come here" in Greek), is Ouzo's sister, one of three puppies left abandoned that were roaming the Skala square for a few months. She quickly spotted and attached herself to Ruud and Marion, a Dutch couple who spend several months a year on the island. Approaching their departure for the winter, they made the decision they could not leave her behind. She was spayed, and just in time as she had just become pregnant with a litter of 6 that would have been born homeless, if not for Elado's good fortune to find her new family and depart with them to Holland. She now has a wonderful time romping in grass and snow and we look forward to seeing her during Ruud and Marion's yearly holiday.
NIKI was found under a car during a very rainy night. Dietha, one of our most valuable volunteers, helped find her a home with a good friend of hers, and Niki is now living happily ever after in Athens. We are lucky enough to see her during her family's holidays on Patmos.
MOSES was found abandoned in Grikou, by Alina Popii, one of our founding members, in the picture with MIRA.
This is SPITHA, found abandoned in Lambi Beach. She was initially picked up and rescued by a seasonal resident of the island, and at the end of summer was found a forever home, right here on Patmos.
OUZO is one of a litter of 3 puppies, was hit by a car. One of the volunteer vets that comes to the island for sterilizations, Steffi, fell in love with her. Unable to take her back during that trip, Steffi made Ouzo comfortable using bandages and painkillers, and left her in the foster care of friends locally. Soon after she returned to take her back to Holland with her. Upon return to Holland, Ouzo was x-rayed and a surgery plan to correct the fracture was made. She is now fully recovered and having a wonderful life in Holland!
MADAM was left in a Agriolivadi restaurant, and we were contacted by the restaurant owners when it was closing. She was spayed (generously sponsored by the family that adopted Alba the dog), and was adopted locally, by Paule Munos with whom she currently lives happily ever after..
This is ALBA now living in Italy. She was abandoned on Patmos, but lucky enough to find a nice family who took care of her during their holidays on the island and took her back to Italy to be adopted by a family they are friends with.

HOPE- Buteo Rufinus or Long Legged Buzzard - A Patmos resident found this injured eagle. It appeared to have been shot and was seriously hurt. She/he was brought to Mondo Cane Animal Welfare Society, who promptly contacted Ms. Maria Ganoti at ANIMA Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, who received the regal bird for examination and treatment.
Despite the corrective surgery performed by the expert staff at Anima, unfortunately she will never be able to fly again due to the severity of the wound and will be kept in the sanctuary the rest of her life.
Alex hase been a Patmian stray for many years. Thanks to the prompt actions of Mondo Cane volunteers who saved his life after he ingested poisoned food that an unknown person purposely left in key locations around the island. He has been adopted by our very own Anna Florentis, and is now living a happy, comfortable life indoors, with his human and canine adoptive family.
This is Zeus and Hera, brother and sister, abandoned by a family well over a year ago. We are not sure about their story but it seems they were abused and undersocialized because it took weeks to catch them. Mondo Cane's, Karin Auer, and her family, worked hard to socialize them and rehabilitate them. Taught them leash manners and made them comfortable around people. No one was ever interested in adopting them no matter how hard we tried. After a very long journey and lots of challenges, Zeus and Hera are flying to Germany today to be fostered until they find a forever home. We would like to thank the gang at Paws & Claws, and specifically Anastasia Melah for finding them foster homes in Germany, as well as Tsambika for caring for them until they departed. While there is still some way to go to help them get adopted, they are out of Patmos, out of kennels, and in a warm home and that is a huge success already. Thank you to all who made this possible. This is one of Mondo Cane's most celebrated successes and we have a huge sense of relief and great joy to see them on their way to a good life!!!
TIMBERLAND (formerly known as Austin) was adopted in STOCKHOLM. Thank you ERIC W. and family for giving him the best home ever and thank you to MC's own board member ASSIA GRAZIOLI for making it happen!!!!!

Congratulations Markos Kanellis on the addition of your new family member, Casper!
This is little Frida, a newborn puppy rejected by her mother that was carefully handraised by Anna Florentis and later by Marianne Smeding and her husband. She developped into a beautiful and lively little thing, that captured the heart of her foster family. Dimitris and Marianne could not see themselves parting with her, so Frida officially joined the family in April 2014.

Latte arrived in London on July 9th 2014 and is adjusting nicely to his new home. Thank you Assia Grazioli for making the connection with Boban, Paws & Claws gang for a flawless transport, and Dorothy Mills and R.A.W.S. for helping us arrange a discounted flight to the UK, and Elena Bussolino for monitoring all sides as we were busy dealing with the Lucky Luke rescue!
